Notarizations & Certified Copies in Edmonton

When a document is leaving Alberta, or the recipient asks for a “notarized” signature or a “certified true copy,” a commissioner’s stamp is not enough. A notary public can witness signatures and certify copies in a way that is recognized in other provinces and internationally.

What we can help with

  • Certified true copies of passports, degrees, transcripts and IDs
  • Notarized signatures on letters and forms for use abroad
  • Affidavits and declarations for use outside Alberta
  • Notarized powers of attorney and invitation letters

Certified true copies

A certified copy has to be made from the original document. Bring the original; we copy it, compare it and certify the copy. We cannot certify a copy of a copy.

Documents for other countries

Many countries also require an apostille or authentication after notarization. The requirements depend on the destination, so bring any instructions you received.

What to bring

  • Valid government-issued photo ID
  • Original documents to be copied
  • The unsigned document to be notarized

Notarizations & Certified Copies: Frequently Asked Questions

Why can’t a commissioner do this?

A commissioner for oaths can only commission documents for use in Alberta and cannot certify copies. Notaries have the broader authority.

How many certified copies can I get?

As many as you need. Each certified copy is made from the original you bring.

Will the other country accept a notarized document?

Notarization is often the first step; some countries also need an apostille. Check with the organization receiving it.

Can you notarize a document in another language?

We can witness your signature, but we need to understand what is being signed, so we may ask for a translation.

Have a Document That Needs to Be Sworn?

Call to set up a time. Bring your photo ID and the unsigned document, and we will take care of the oath, signature and stamp.
