Travel Consent Letters in Edmonton

When a child travels without one or both parents or legal guardians, border officers and airlines may ask for a consent letter from the parent who is not travelling. The Government of Canada recommends that the letter be signed in front of someone authorized to administer oaths, so its authenticity is harder to question.

What we can help with

  • Consent letters for a child travelling with one parent
  • Consent letters for travel with grandparents, relatives or school groups
  • Letters for parents who share custody
  • Notarized letters when the destination country requires it

Commissioned or notarized?

For most trips, a letter signed before a commissioner for oaths is what travellers use. Some destination countries have their own rules and may require a notarized letter; check the destination’s requirements before you book, and we can notarize instead.

Preparing the letter

Canada’s travel website has a sample consent letter you can fill in. Include the child’s details, travel dates, destination and the travelling adult’s information. Leave it unsigned; the parent giving consent signs it in front of us.

What to bring

  • Photo ID for each parent signing the letter
  • The completed consent letter, unsigned
  • A copy of the child’s passport or birth certificate, if the letter refers to it

Travel Consent Letters: Frequently Asked Questions

Does the travelling parent need a consent letter?

The letter comes from the parent or guardian who is not travelling, giving permission for the trip.

Does the child need to attend?

No. Only the parent or guardian signing the letter needs to attend with their ID.

Is a consent letter required by law?

It is not always legally required, but it is strongly recommended, and officials may ask for one. Having it certified makes it more credible.

Both parents are not travelling. Who signs?

Both parents or guardians typically sign when the child travels with someone else, such as a grandparent or school group.
